From the vineyard:
The vines are all pruned and are awaiting budbreak which may happen around the third week of March. We have had good rainfall which is important for when the vines wake up from their long winter nap. Cover crops within the rows look good and healthy which will help to build soil health, structure and provide minerals to the vines later in the year.
In the cellar:
The wines are progressing nicely and have already been racked once off the lees. The 2007 vintage shows all the signs of being a great one. Low yields in the vineyards made wines with good concentration and ripe soft tannins. Good clean fermentations are allowing the fruit to show early potential for great quality wines. In April we will begin putting the blends together and determine how much Petite Sirah will be needed to maintain our style. We find that too much Petite Sirah covers the spicy fruit that we look for in the Zinfandels that we like... more to come about blending in our next edition.
2006 releases:
The 2006's are starting off with a huge bang! The wines were well received at the San Francisco wine competition in January. The two Zinfandels both won DOUBLE GOLD and went head to head for best of class; the winner was the Dry Creek just edging out his brother! There were over 4000 wines entered, 30 received Double Golds and Rusina nailed 2 of them. By the way, the Petite Sirah bagged a GOLD medal as well. With the early reviews, it should be a great year for our customers as well!
